The CJR team along with representatives from the courts that collaborate with CJR enjoyed a Cultural Luncheon that featured 80 contributed dishes from around the world including curry from Jamaica, Bola de Fuego from Puerto Rico, Yuca from the Dominican Republic, Pastel de Nata from Portugal, and more! Participants were also treated to a dramatic reading by Gigi Valentin, CJR Program Director, Waterbury LYNC, of Still I Rise by Maya Angelou set to African drums; a personal story about student Justin Benitez’s experience with his Puerto Rican culture; and Rise Up by Andra Day, sung by Taylor Craig, Administrative Assistant, REGIONS program. Brea Ashe, former student and now staffer, pictured with CJR head chef, Michael Cantu. "It was no surprise or shock hiring Brea. I always knew she would be great in culinary arts. She was dedicated to the art of cooking even as a teen in the kitchen. We are beyond grateful she chose to come back here to work,” said Chef Mike. Brea added, "It feels like a real full circle moment to be here and work with Chef Mike again. My goal is to someday teach culinary arts." #CJR #Impact
